About the Symposium

Padma Vibhushan Professor Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao was one of the greatest Indian statisticians and the recipient of the 2023 International Prize in Statistics, often regarded as the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in Statistics. Prof. Rao received this prestigious award for his groundbreaking 1945 paper, “Information and the Accuracy Attainable in the Estimation of Statistical Parameters,” published in the Bulletin of the Calcutta Mathematical Society. Born on September 10, 1920, at Hoovina Hadagali, Karnataka, Prof. Rao lived a remarkable life spanning more than 102 years until his passing on August 22, 2023.

The Centre for Advanced Research in Applied Mathematics and Statistics (CARAMS), MAHE, has been organizing events and special sessions in his honor since 2020, when it celebrated “CRR Day” marking his 100th birthday. In the same year, CARAMS organized the international conference ALAPS 2020 (online) in honor of Prof. Rao. With the assistance of his daughter, Dr. Teja Rao, Prof. Rao joined the conference virtually, accepted the felicitation, and conveyed his best wishes to participants. Subsequently, CARAMS organized ICLAA 2021 and IWMS 2021 (hybrid format), which included special sessions dedicated to Prof. Rao. In 2023, a two-day symposium was organized as a tribute to Prof. Rao, followed by one-day symposiums in 2024 and 2025, accompanied by several student-centered activities celebrating his life and contributions.

CARAMS, MAHE will organize a one-day symposium on September 18, 2026, in memory of Prof. Rao. On this occasion, there will be a technical talk by Dr T.P.M Pakkala, which will be a part of the CRR Lecture Series organized by CARAMS, MAHE.
